MEETING 30.1.12
Present: Bradley Howe, Bev Young, Che Richards, Toby Martin, John Starr, Nathan Doe and Jane Gray.
1. Funding – no news but we shall be looking for some more funding for the web-site. There may also be some funds to pay for the blank boards, which we will decorate at the Urban Games as an Arts Project. Jane to ask Gill, our fund-raiser, to select some suitable applications. Jane is gathering the Evercrete promised funding as the order has gone through.
2. Shelter – after some discussion, it was decided to remove the front of the shelter to deter those who are abusing it from gathering there. Jane to ask TKE to take it off.
3. Camera – Che bought up the idea of a web-cam for the skatepark. This was a project we costed a while back. The problem is connecting to a computer with internet access, which would have to be in Turpins or the Leisure Centre. Once we have the HUB, this would become a distinct possibility.
4. Web-site – is good, Bradley recommended the calendar so that anyone can see what’s planned ahead. This is for anyone to post events, birthdays etc:
5. Film – we have pulled out of the ECC film project as we felt that it had not been thought through properly. There is still the prospect of making a film or video diary of the summer to show at Hylands Park in front of 15.000 people or to enter the short film competition at Saffron Screen. The film group need to get organised on this.
6. Sporting Hero’s – there can be four categories, skater, BMXer, blader and scooter rider. Toby to do portraits when we have decided who to put forward. There have been some votes on the web-site/Facebook but we need more. The idea is to nominate a hero, someone you think does amazing tricks or is just a good person to have around the park, and we will do a short write-up, take their photo and send it all to the museum to illustrate their exhibition “Sporting Heroes”.
7. Summer events – we will look into inviting a parkour team to give a demonstration at the Urban Games in September. We have located a fast food van (with bacon) and there will be ice cream and possibly a coffee van, hopefully at both events. Bradley’s idea of rotating the sports was discussed but it was decided that it may be difficult to get visitors to comply.
SKOPERA – Jane and Dan and Bev went to a meeting about the events taking place on 19th May through the town, focusing first on the museum and ending up at the skatepark for a skating/music finale. Jane also went to a meeting in Harlow to meet other groups who are involved with the giant’s visit in their areas.
8. The Skate Mates – the meeting went well and we hope to have 5 new people joining us to help with fund-raising, contractors and landscaping etc: thank you to Toby and Bradley for the presentation.
9. UDC consultation – Bradley had tried to access the UDC questionnaire without success. Jane will put it up on our web-site as soon as possible so it can be easily located and filled in. It is very important that everyone visits the S/W Town Hall on Tuesday 7th Feb and takes part in the consultation there, it involves putting stickers on a map. We want development in the field called SAF6 opposite the skatepark to get our Hub built. Every sticker will count so take friends and family there too from 10am until 8pm.
10. The Hub – there is lots of research going on to find ways of making the Hub pay when we get it built, Jane went to Littleport last week to see a project there. They run a charity shop and a used furniture warehouse to help pay for the running costs of their centre.
11. Architect – Mr Ralph Carpenter is coming to meet us at the Leisure Centre café at 2pm on Saturday 4th February to discuss what the Hub might look like and what you want to see in it. Come along and meet him and give him your ideas.
12. Turpins – we need more people who want to have a go at bowling in Turpins, please give your name to Jane by e-mail janempc@btinternet.com or phone 07967444321.
